Biography
Caroline Ritter is a visual artist whose work draws from her connection to the water and the Gulf of Mexico. Using clay and various sculptural materials, she explores the contrasting emotions and experiences evoked by the familiar shallows of the coastline and the mysterious depths of the ocean. Her thematic influences stem from her knowledge of the Gulf, passed down through generations of her family, and expanded through her personal experiences on the water. Caroline’s process is shaped by the craft of net making, imagery from nautical charts and bathymetric maps, and the time she spends on the water. She specializes in creating sculptural ceramic forms that combine hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques, along with mixed-media installations.
In the classroom, Caroline is committed to fostering student engagement and success. Passionate about building strong student relationships, she helps students achieve their goals through technical proficiency and creative idea development. Caroline teaches a broad range of ceramic techniques, including hand-building, wheel throwing, slip casting, mold making, 3D ceramic printing, clay and glaze development, and firing techniques.
Before joining UWF in 2023, Caroline taught ceramics at several institutions in Florida, including Florida State University.
