Biography
Dr. Emma Fletcher is a Research Associate working with Dr. Panagiotis Koutakis in the Department of Public Health. As part of this research team, Emma’s overall research agenda is to delineate potential underlying mechanisms involved in skeletal muscle pathology, particularly in response to peripheral artery disease and associated comorbidities. As the loss of viable skeletal muscle is independently associated with increased patient morbidity and mortality, Emma’s current and future research objectives are also interventional. Specifically, she plans to test various biological, biochemical and/or lifestyle strategies, including exercise, in cell, animal and human models to determine any possible intramuscular ameliorative and/or restorative effects.
Prior to joining UWF, Emma received her Bachelor of Science in Sports Science and Health from Dublin City University in Ireland, a Master of Arts in Clinical Exercise Science (with an emphasis on cardiovascular rehabilitation) from Central Michigan University, a Master of Science in Exercise Science from the University of South Carolina, a degree in Veterinary Medicine from University College Dublin (in Ireland), and a Doctorate in Exercise Science from Baylor University. Following her doctorate, Emma chose to remain at Baylor to work with Dr. Koutakis as a Postdoctoral Research Associate. During her postdoctoral career, she also served on multiple committees, including Baylor’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).
