Biography

Dr. Ring is a clinician-scientist specializing in acute and chronic pulmonary disease, mechanical ventilation, and critical care research. He holds a PhD in Health Sciences with a focus on public health and clinical epidemiology from Northern Illinois University, as well as both undergraduate and graduate degrees in respiratory care from UNC Charlotte.

As a respiratory therapist with advanced credentials in neonatal/pediatric and adult critical care, Dr. Ring has served as an advanced respiratory care practitioner at Duke University Medical Center and as an ECMO Specialist at UNC Health Care.

Dr. Ring’s research focuses on the implementation and management of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), mechanical ventilation, and innovative monitoring technologies in pulmonary and critical care medicine. He is dedicated to developing rapid, non-invasive diagnostic techniques and translating -omics approaches, such as breath-based metabolomics (“breathomics”), into practical tools for the management of critical and chronic respiratory diseases.

Dr. Ring serves as Principal Investigator on several federally funded projects, including studies on medical equipment in extreme environments, as well as foundation-supported research in patient-ventilator dyssynchrony and EIT-guided ventilator liberation. He also serves on the editorial boards of Respiratory Care and Respiratory Care Reports, has published in leading journals, and is active in professional societies including AARC, CHEST, and SCCM.

In his current role as Director of Clinical Education at the University of West Florida, Dr. Ring is excited to lead and support future respiratory therapists through mentorship and evidence-based practice.

Before joining the University of West Florida, Dr. Ring held faculty appointments at UNC Charlotte and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
