Service Learning and Projects

Through service learning and hands-on projects, UWF-Teach gives students a chance to explore teaching from day one.

Experience Before You Teach. Impact Before You Graduate.

In UWF-Teach, your journey into teaching starts early. Through courses, internships, and collaborative classroom projects, you’ll apply what you learn in meaningful ways. Whether you’re observing a classroom, designing lessons with faculty mentors, or leading a student project based on real research, you’ll build the confidence and experience needed to succeed as a future STEM educator.

Applied Experiences in STEM Education

Exploring Inquiry Teaching (EDG2041)

This introductory course gives STEM majors the chance to explore the teaching profession. It includes a 15-hour service learning practicum in a local secondary STEM classroom, plus opportunities to observe, design, and deliver inquiry-based lessons.

Citizen Science Projects

Collaborate with UWF science faculty and classroom teachers to design hands-on learning experiences based on real-world research. These projects bring science to life for both the future teacher and their future students.

Mathematics Education Proseminar

Working closely with a faculty advisor, math teaching students explore a topic in mathematics or math education and share their findings through a formal paper and oral presentation. This project helps future teachers connect their coursework with classroom practice.

STEM Master Mentor

Experienced math and science educators provide mentorship throughout your field experiences, helping you strengthen your instructional skills and confidence in the classroom.

Field Experience Pathway

After completing Exploring Inquiry Teaching, UWF-Teach students continue building their classroom experience through two advanced field placements. These courses are designed to gradually increase responsibility and provide real-world opportunities to practice and refine teaching skills.

Secondary Practicum (ESE4940)

Spend 100 hours in a secondary STEM classroom observing expert teaching, planning instruction, and delivering multiple lessons under the guidance of a mentor teacher. This practicum bridges theory and practice, helping students grow into confident, capable educators.

Apprenticeship Teaching (EDG4948)

This full-semester, half-time placement is the final step before graduation. Under the mentorship of a master teacher, students take the lead in planning, teaching, and managing a real classroom. It’s a chance to put everything into practice—and prepare for the first year of teaching.
