Understanding FTCEs and Your Path to Teacher Certification in Florida

Choosing to become a teacher is a big decision and an important one. Teachers shape confidence and make a lasting impact far beyond the classroom for students. It is one of the most rewarding careers you can pursue.
At the University of West Florida, there are multiple pathways that can help you become an educator. Whether you are already in a teaching program or exploring alternative certification options, understanding the certification process can help you make an informed decision about your future.
If you are thinking about teaching in Florida, you have likely heard about the Florida Teacher Certification Exams (FTCEs). Many students assume their major determines whether they can become a teacher. That is not always true.
Here is what actually matters and how the process works.
Certification is based on subject area, not just your major!
In Florida, certification for grades 6–12 is tied to the subject you want to teach, not just your degree title.
For example, if you want to teach Biology or Environmental Science, the Florida Department of Education looks at whether you meet subject-area requirements.
You can qualify in two main ways:
- Complete a state-approved teacher preparation program in that subject
- Earn a bachelor’s degree in any major and pass the required FTCE subject area exam
This means a major like Interdisciplinary Sciences - Community Education can still lead to certification. The key is having enough coursework in biology or environmental science to prepare you for the exam.
UWF Teacher Education Programs and FTCE Requirements
UWF offers state-approved and CAEP-accredited education programs that prepare students for certification and the required FTCE exams.
The Elementary Education, B.A. program at UWF prepares students to teach kindergarten through sixth grade and includes both Reading and ESOL endorsements built into the degree. Graduates are eligible for Florida professional certification upon successful completion of the program and testing requirements.
Students in the Elementary Education program must complete the following FTCEs:
- General Knowledge Exam
- Professional Education Exam,
- Elementary Education K–6 Subject Area Exam
The Exceptional Student and Elementary Education, B.A. Online program prepares students to work with both elementary students and students with disabilities.
Students in the ESE/Elementary Education program must complete the following FTCEs:
- General Knowledge Exam
- Professional Education Exam
- Elementary Education K–6 Subject Area Exam
- Exceptional Student Education K–12 Subject Area Exam
These programs provide one of the most direct routes to Florida certification because clinical experiences, teaching methods, and certification preparation are embedded into the degree.
What happens if you switch out of a teaching major?
UWF Teach programs, such as Biology TEACH, include a built-in certification pathway.
It covers:
- Teaching methods courses
- Practicum and apprenticeship teaching experience
- Direct eligibility for Florida professional certification after graduation
If you switch to a different major, you lose that built-in path.
You can still be eligible to teach.
How the FL certification process changes
- If you stay in a teaching major:
- FL Certification is completed as part of your degree
- You graduate ready for professional certification
- If you switch to a non-teaching major:
- You may graduate faster
- FL Certification will not happen at graduation
- You will complete certification steps after earning your degree
- This path is common, but it requires extra planning.
How your timeline may change
- If you stay in a teaching major:
- FL Certification is completed as part of your degree
- You graduate ready for professional certification
- If you switch to a non-teaching major:
- You may graduate faster
- Certification will not happen at graduation
- You will complete certification steps after earning your degree
- This path is common, but it requires extra planning.
What about adding an education minor (in-person program)?
Many students consider an education minor. It is important to understand what it does and does not do.
An education minor:
- Does not lead to teacher certification on its own
- Adds coursework that can help later in the certification process
- In-person content course and practicum
- No testing is required to complete the minor
It is most useful for students who plan to pursue certification after graduation.
The Alternative Certification Route
Florida offers a clear alternative pathway to teaching. Many professionals use this route.
A typical process looks like this:
- Earn a bachelor’s degree
- Pass the FTCE subject area exam, such as Biology 6–12
- Get hired as a teacher
- Receive a Temporary Teaching Certificate
- Complete required education courses while working, usually within 2 to 3 years
- Apply for a Professional Teaching Certificate
This pathway allows you to start teaching while completing certification requirements.
Key Takeaway
Your major does not have to determine your path to teaching in Florida. While students graduating from our education certification programs benefit from clinical experiences and the completion of the FTCEs, there are valid and valuable alternative routes to teaching in Florida.
What matters most is:
- Passing the required FTCE exam(s)
- Meeting Florida certification requirements
- Choosing the path that fits your life, timeline, and goals
There is no universal “right” choice. Some students benefit from the traditional route and want the full clinical experience before teaching, and others need a faster or more flexible option and pursue alternative certification.
The most important thing is understanding how each pathway works so you can make an informed decision.
What if you move out of Florida after earning your degree?
Teacher certification requirements vary by state. While many states offer reciprocity or pathways for out-of-state teacher candidates, requirements can be different depending on how you earned your certification.
Earning a traditional teacher certification degree with a built-in certification may make you a strong candidate and simplify the certification process when moving to another state.
Some districts and states may:
- Prefer candidates who completed a state-approved teacher preparation program
- Require additional coursework if certification is earned through an alternative route
- Ask for additional testing
It will be beneficial to research other states’ teaching requirements.
