Intelligent Systems and Robotics
In partnership with the Institute for Human & Machine Cognition (IHMC), UWF will provide the first Ph.D. program in Intelligent Systems and Robotics in the state of Florida serving the needs of manufacturing, healthcare, defense and other high-tech industries as well as provide significant economic benefits to the region and the state.
Collaboration between the University of West Florida and the Institute for Human & Machine Cognition
The University of West Florida has partnered with the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition located in downtown Pensacola to develop a doctoral program in intelligent systems and robotics.
The doctoral program aligns with the University’s strategic vision for research that impacts Northwest Florida’s economic development and technology enterprise. It will serve the manufacturing, health care, defense, and other high-tech industries, providing critical support to high-demand career fields.
I’ve envisioned a program like this for a long time. It will attract top young talent from the world. This is such a great move not only for UWF and IHMC, but also for Pensacola and the state.

ISR faculty receives grant from United States Army
Dr. Jalaian received a grant from U.S. Army titled “Enhancing Cyber Situational Understanding through Neuro-Symbolic Risk-Aware Deep Learning Decision-Making”. The grant aims to develop, implement, and test a novel artificial intelligence (AI) decision-maker known as the Neuro-Symbolic Bayesian Neural Network Decision Maker (NS-BNN-DM) framework.

One of our PhD students, Raffaele Galliera, is interviewed by AIHub.org about his research on deep reinforcement learning for communication networks.
ISR Faculty Received a Grant from the US Department of Agriculture
Dr. Sevil, in collaboration with faculty at New Mexico State University, received a research grant from the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program of the USD. In this three-year project, the research team will develop a multi-robot monitoring system for precision agriculture and water management in NM green chile pepper farming.
ISR Student received an award
One of the ISR PhD students, Bhavyansh Mishra, received the UWF Outstanding Research Assistant Award.
ISR Faculty Received a Grant from Air Force SBIR/STTR Program
Dr. Sevil, in collaboration with Catalano Aerospace, received a Phase-I SBIR/STTR grant from the US Air Force. In the project titled “Battlefield-Integrated Reconnaissance Drone (BIRD) with Advanced Target Recognition,” the research team will develop a tactical tethered drone primarily intended for surveillance and reconnaissance applications.
ISR Students received Best Oral Paper Award at Humanoids Conference
ISR students Duncan Calvert, Bhavyansh Mishra, and Stephen McCrory, with co-authors Dr. Sylvain Bertrand, Dr. Robert Griffin, and Dr. Jerry Pratt, received the Best Oral Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Humanoid Robots (Humanoids 2022) for their paper entitled “A Fast, Autonomous, Bipedal Walking Behavior over Rapid Regions."
