Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Waldir Berbel-Filho Published in "Nature"

March 11, 2026 | March 2026

Dr. Waldir Berbel-Filho, Assistant Professor in the UWF Department of Biology, authored a "News and Views" commentary published this month in Nature. Titled "How an all-female fish species defies evolutionary expectations," the piece was written by invitation and appears alongside the primary research article it addresses – a format Nature uses to provide expert context for significant findings. Dr. Berbel-Filho's commentary explores how a clonal, all-female fish species uses a genetic process called gene conversion to survive far longer than evolutionary theory would predict. Congratulations to Dr. Berbel-Filho on this well-deserved recognition.
