A great benefit of UWF’s Leisure Learning program is the ability to build connections within the community. One of Leisure Learning’s earliest relationships and among our biggest supporters is the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN). Located in downtown Pensacola, FPAN aims to give back to the community through its mission to “...promote and facilitate the stewardship, public appreciation and value of Florida’s archaeological heritage through regional centers, partnerships and community engagement.”

FPAN’s History

Since 1980, the University of West Florida’s Archaeology Institute has conducted various archaeological surveys around Pensacola, revealing its rich history. As the region's demand for further archaeological research grew, UWF established FPAN to help with future endeavors. Established in 2004, FPAN was created to assist local governments and the Florida Division of Historical Resources in its archaeological responsibilities and work on public outreach projects.

Commitment to the Community

FPAN remains committed to preserving and protecting Florida's historic resources while promoting public education about the state’s rich past. Through a variety of public events, such as archaeology labs and panel discussions, FPAN works to provide engaging ways to keep the topic of archaeology alive. Alongside their public outreach events, FPAN employees assist with archaeological fieldwork in collaboration with archaeological research centers across Florida. Their findings help provide the community with invaluable insight into the history behind the land we live on.

“Throughout the last decade, I've had the delightful opportunity to instruct numerous classes for our Leisure Learners. Witnessing their persistent thirst for knowledge is truly inspiring, and engaging with these groups is undeniably one of the highlights of my involvement,” says Mike Thomin, manager of FPAN.
