The Pensacola News Journal has delivered the news to Pensacolians for 120 years. That’s a lot of ink, information and recorded history. And, since 1964, the News Journal has helped tell the University of West Florida’s story.
“A community with a university has a clear advantage,” said Kevin Doyle, president and publisher of the Pensacola News Journal. “Having students and faculty living here furthers education, athletics and the arts. To be successful in economic development, a region must have a highly-educated workforce and UWF can provide that.”
Legendary News Journal publisher Braden Ball and editor emeritus J. Earle Bowden helped guide the UWF Foundation through its formative years.
More recently, the newspaper sponsored the “Do It” Community Challenge Campaign in support of the Vice Admiral John H. Fetterman State of Florida Maritime Museum. At the end of the special campaign, $401,592 was raised for the museum. The Pensacola News Journal contributed $50,000 to support this effort along with other community partners.
“I have organized ‘Do It!’ campaigns in other cities and they were always well received,” said Doyle. “Individuals and businesses rose to the challenge and made their gift count four times greater than it normally would.”
Like the University of West Florida, the News Journal is also committed to feeding the Northwest Florida community’s appetite for knowledge.
“We are the No. 1 local news source whether it is through our newspaper, specialty publications, online or mobile,” said Doyle. “We spend millions of dollars a year supporting a news staff that serves as the information heartbeat of our community. We are the watchdog for our region.”
