The Intensive English Program offers programs designed to help non-native speakers develop English skills for personal, academic, and professional purposes. All of our teachers have extensive experience in teaching English to speakers of other languages.
The academic Intensive English Program improves the listening, speaking, reading, vocabulary, and writing skills needed to study at an American university and includes TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) practice for advanced students. The official TOEFL is given on campus at the UWF Testing Centers.
The Intensive English Program offers instruction on three levels, with sublevels as needed; students are given a placement test on the first day of class. There are 20 class hours of instruction per week. Normally, a student completes one level of instruction in the course of a semester. Advancement to the next level of instruction is based on the student’s post test score and class performance.
In order to allow adequate time for the processing of the I-20 form for a VISA application, students should apply to the Intensive English Program six to eight weeks before the beginning of a session.
Fall and spring semesters consist of two seven-week terms, and summer consists of two six-week terms. Students may opt to enroll in the entire semester or enroll in a half-term. Students may enter the program during the first or second week or at the beginning of any session.
Beginning in the Fall of 2008, it is possible for IEP students to enter the University of West Florida without one of the standard admission tests. IEP students who complete the high-advanced class with an average of B+ (88) and score 78 or higher on the IEP exit test (MELICET) are eligible for admission to the University of West Florida if they meet other requirements of the university.
