Geographic information technology is one of the most exciting and rapidly growing computer technologies today in governments, utility companies, and in private organizations. With a growth rate estimated at between 35 and 40 percent per year, the job market lacks qualified and experienced professionals to help design, implement, and manage these new systems. In addition, the job descriptions of an increasing number of positions in government agencies and private businesses are being rewritten to require employees to use GIS in geography, archeology, business, urban planning, civil engineering, surveying, landscape architecture, environmental science, geology, and other related fields. The UWF GIS Certificate Program is designed to provide students with the conceptual base and technical skills necessary to develop and manage GIS projects relating to environmental and socioeconomic applications.

Entrance Requirements
UWF undergraduate majors must obtain a C- or better in the following courses: College Algebra, Elements of Statistics and Microcomputer Application Packages. Students who have equivalent background but did not take the above courses formally may be admitted into the program. Students must also receive formal approval from the proposed GIS Certificate Program Committee.

Prerequisite
GIS 3015/L Cartographic Skills \ Lab (4)

List of Courses
GIS 4035/L Photo Interpretation and Remote Sensing \ Lab(4)
GIS 4043/L Geographic Information Systems (4)
GIS 4048 Applications in Geographic Information Systems \ Lab (3)

GIS 4XXX GIS Programming (3)

and choose from the following (3 hrs. total):
GEO 4905 Directed Study (1-3)
GIS 4944 GIS Internship (1-3)

Students who successfully complete the 21-credit program with an overall 3.0 GPA will be awarded a certificate in Geographic Information Science. For more information, please contact the Department of Environmental Studies at 850-474-2746.
