
Read for Real is a Florida standards-based instruction program that delivers the best practices of direct and explicit strategy instruction for reading non-fiction. Through exciting, science and social studies content, the instructional model offers:

- Comprehension Strategies: Students learn, practice and apply comprehension strategies by previewing the text, making connections and recalling information
- Vocabulary: Antonyms, synonyms, homonyms, word roots and affixes, analogies, multiple meanings, figurative language, reference skills, parts of speech, context clues, word origins,compound words, comparatives/superlatives, abbreviating, words insides words and time/order of words.
- Fluency: Readers’ theatre, poetry, letters and journal entries, monologues and dialogues, speeches, lyrics or parodies and descriptive paragraphs.
- Three non-fiction readings for students to learn, practice, and apply the comprehension strategies.
- Three standards based vocabulary activities that reinforce and extend a vocabulary concept from each section.
- Three standards based fluency activities that engage students in oral readings of a variety of texts.
- Reading in the Real World and Connecting to the Real World at the end of each unit extend learning with practical texts and extension activities.
- Develop and demonstrate comprehension skills by learning strategies to use before, during and after reading.
- Take ownership of new vocabulary by applying strategies that unlock the meaning of new and unfamiliar words.
- Develop fluency and expression through a variety of texts.
- Gain independence in accessing information from non-fiction tests through a scaffolded instructional plan.
- Improve test scores by applying strategies and skills to assessments and standardized tests.

This free Informal Reading Assessment (IRA) will provide us with the reading instructional needs and the amount of support your child is likely to need in Read for Real After School Program.
During this IRA, we will be assessing the following:
- Word Recognition-to determine reading grade level
- Oral Reading- to determine reading grade level and fluency
- Silent Reading – to determine grade level comprehension
The total length of the assessment will last around 20 minutes. Following the assessment, Denise Chapman will review the information and schedule a time to speak with the parent regarding the results. There is limited seating for this free IRA, so sign up today!
