Degree Programs

The Department of Art offers two baccalaureate programs, leading to either the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Art, or the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree.  Minors are awarded in Art and Art Education.

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Art:

Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.):

Minor in Art:

  • Studio Art emphasis
  • Art History emphasis

Minor in Art Education:

  • Teacher Certification is gained through the Professional Training Option (available only with the B.A., Studio Art Specialization).

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Art:  The BA curriculum has a liberal arts orientation, and is awarded to students in three specializations: studio art, graphic design, art history.  Within the studio art specialization, students can concentrate in any one of several media, each with its own dedicated facilities and equipment:  drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, computer imaging, printmaking, photography, and ceramics.  Two directions are open to art history majors: one prepares students for future graduate school study; the other is geared more toward the practical training needed for museum and gallery professionals.  The new Graphic Design Specialization (available in Fall 2008) provides students with the necessary background to enter the competitive world of print and web design.  (For more details about the BA in Art, consult the UWF catalog, BA programs)

Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA):  The BFA is distinguished from the BA by its greater emphasis on preparing students for professional Fine Arts careers.  The same studio concentrations are available for the BFA as the BA majors: drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, computer imaging, printmaking, photography, and ceramics.  Frequently, however, BFA majors choose to explore the boundaries and interstices between the various traditional media, in mixed media works that are now labeled “new media,” or “new genres.”  Another distinguishing characteristic of the BFA is that entry into the program is by profolio review.  This review conducted by the entire Art Faculty customarily takes place in the student’s junior year.  Until then, students are registered as BA majors in Studio Art.  A new degree specialization will be available in the Fall of 2008: the BFA in Electronic Art.  Coursework in this new specialization is tailored to students interested in exploring digital imagery and video formats in their artistic practice.  (For more details about the BFA, consult the UWF catalog, BFA programs)

Minor in Art Education:  This curriculum combines the Department of Art’s courses in art education with specific general education coursework, offered through the College of Professional Studies (COPS).   Students, pursuing the Art Education minor, must also be registered as a BA, Studio Art major.  A specific list of studio courses is designed for future art educators, encouraging them to explore a wide variety of artistic media, and to study different artistic cultures and historical styles.  (For the specific list of courses see the UWF catalog).  By the Fall 2009, the general education courses listed in the UWF catalog for the Art Education minor will be those recommended under the Professional Training Option.  The PTO, awarded by COPS, is a DOE-approved, teacher-training program, leading to Teacher Certification in the State of Florida (provide link to UWF catalog on PTO).  Students in Art Education, who are planning to graduate in December 2009 or later, should follow the PTO coursework for their Art Education minor.

Minor in Art:  The Department invites all students from any major to complete a Minor in Art.  Students must complete 18 hours of coursework in any area of studio art or art history, with at least 12 hours taken 3000 or  4000 level.  Students should speak to an art advisor to tailor their minor coursework to their major area of interest.  (For more information, consult the UWF catalog).
