National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grants Program
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Coastal Program is hosting a one day workshop on our National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grants Program. The purpose of this workshop is to provide information about the program; facilitate the development of project proposals to manage, restore, enhance and acquire coastal wetlands; and encourage partnerships that lead to successful proposals.
The meeting will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2009 at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.
This is a great opportunity to gain information about this competitive grants program, meet potential partners in your area and around the state, exchange project ideas, and learn the application procedure and guidelines. The meeting open to anyone and we encourage you to circulate this announcement to other interested parties. A draft agenda is included; workshop details and a final agenda are forthcoming.

NOAA Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program Opportunity

The Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship Application is now available on-line. The application due date is January 30, 2009. You must be a sophomore at the time of application to be eligible. Approximately 100 undergraduate students, U.S. citizens only, who will be a junior in the fall 2009, will be selected as Hollings scholars beginning fall 2009 academic term.

The Gulf Ecology Division (Gulf Breeze, FL) of the National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory, of the Office of Research and Development (ORD), U .S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is seeking one or more recent graduates with a B.S. or equivalent degree in biology, chemistry, ecology, environmental science, marine biology, zoology, computer science, information technology, mathematics, physics, or related field to provide services under a contractual agreement. The contractor(s) shall assist in understanding the physical, chemical, and biological dynamics of coastal wetlands and estuaries, determining ecological condition, evaluating rates and causes of declining systems, and/or predicting future conditions under various alternative water quality scenarios.

The primary work location is 1 Sabine Island Drive, Gulf Breeze, Florida, 32561. Work shall be primarily performed in a laboratory, but some field work may be required. Opportunity for Students, Post-docs and Colleagues
The 2009 Microbial Diversity course will be offered at the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, MA from June 13 - July 30, 2009 under the new co-directorship of Steve Zinder and Dan Buckley.
This unique course focusing on microbial ecology introduces students to metagenomics and other advanced concepts/techniques in modern microbiology using state-of-the art equipment in an intensive lecture/laboratory format.
We have generous resources to help defray most of the costs for attending the course.
