Biography
Dr. Omar Faruqe Hamim is a Lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering and Construction Management at the University of West Florida. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Transportation Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He later earned his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Transportation Infrastructure & Systems from Purdue University, where his doctoral research focused on developing efficient and resilient infrastructure for electric vehicles. He also completed a Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Engineering from Purdue University.
Before joining the University of West Florida, Dr. Hamim worked as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in the Urban Mobility, Networks and Intelligence (UMNI) Lab at Purdue University. He also served as a Graduate Research Assistant at Purdue University from 2021 to 2025. Prior to coming to the United States, he was an Assistant Professor and Lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering at BUET, where he taught courses in transportation engineering, surveying, engineering computation, pavement design, traffic studies, and other civil engineering subjects. He also served as an Adjunct Faculty member in the Department of Architecture at the State University of Bangladesh and worked as a consultant with the Bureau of Research, Testing and Consultation at BUET.
Dr. Hamim’s research focuses on intelligent, resilient, and sustainable transportation systems. His research interests include transportation planning and operations, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, transportation cybersecurity, connected and autonomous vehicles, infrastructure resilience, road safety, large-scale traffic and driving simulation, machine learning, computer vision, data science, network science, smart cities, and socio-technical systems. His work combines advanced data analytics, artificial intelligence, spatial analysis, simulation, and behavioral modeling to address emerging challenges in transportation systems.
He has contributed to several externally funded research projects supported by the National Science Foundation, Indiana Department of Transportation, National Institute for Health Research in the United Kingdom, and Purdue University. His roles have included Principal Investigator, Postdoctoral Lead, Student Lead, and Student Co-Lead. These projects have addressed topics including public electric vehicle charging infrastructure, managed charging and vehicle-to-grid integration, electric vehicle growth and demand forecasting, charging needs for multifamily dwellings, and transportation safety.
Dr. Hamim has authored or co-authored more than twenty peer-reviewed journal articles in leading transportation, energy, safety, and urban systems journals, including Sustainable Cities and Society, Transportation Research Part D: Transport and Environment, Journal of Transport Geography, Applied Energy, Expert Systems with Applications, Accident Analysis & Prevention, Safety Science, Applied Ergonomics, and Environment and Planning B. He has also published conference papers and book chapters and has co-authored the book Electric Vehicle Planning and Operations: Methods and Metrics with Prof. Satish V. Ukkusuri. His research has addressed electric vehicle charging station usage and accessibility, infrastructure resilience, transportation cybersecurity, road safety, travel behavior, pedestrian safety, and transportation applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence.
Dr. Hamim has received several academic and professional honors, including the Purdue University Fall 2025 Graduate Student Engagement Award, the Edward J. Cox Memorial Transportation Scholarship from the Institute of Transportation Engineers Indiana Section, the Kinnier Health and Wellbeing Scholarship, the Japan Society of Civil Engineers Study Tour Grant, the University Grants Commission Scholarship, and multiple university merit scholarships and Dean’s List recognitions at BUET.
In addition to his research and teaching, Dr. Hamim contributes to the academic community through peer review, student mentorship, and professional service. He has reviewed manuscripts for numerous journals in transportation, energy, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, safety, and urban systems and has served as a reviewer for the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting. He has mentored both undergraduate and graduate students and has served as a judge for undergraduate research conferences at Purdue University. He is also an Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) and has passed the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering examination in Civil Engineering.
