Purpose Happens Here

I chose to attend the University of West Florida as a Pensacola local because I was drawn to the strength of the psychology program and how deeply the University is rooted in the community. As both an undergraduate and graduate psychology student in the Licensed Mental Health Counseling program, I immersed myself in experiences that helped me to grow academically and professionally. From representing the program at the Southeastern Psychological Association to serving in roles that welcomed and encouraged incoming students, I began to see myself not just as a student, but as a future clinician.

One of the most defining parts of my journey has been learning under Dr. Keya Wiggins-Jackson, assistant professor of clinical practice and LMHC program director. Her structured, hands-on approach challenged me to think critically and apply theory in meaningful ways. Conducting mock therapy sessions, utilizing the skills modeled in class and applying the insights I gathered from her clinical experience gave me the confidence I needed to begin my work as a future therapist.

Through UWF’s strong presence in the Pensacola community, I secured an internship at Lakeview’s Children and Adolescent Outpatient Services, where I now provide mental health therapy. Engaging in individual, group and family counseling has prepared me for life after graduation and affirmed my calling to this work. At UWF, I didn’t just earn degrees — I stepped fully into my purpose.
