Discovery Happens Here
For as long as I can remember, I have possessed a natural curiosity. Questions like, “What is that?,” “What does it do?” and “How does it work?” came naturally to me. As a young child, I also boldly investigated things, which often led to a wealth of bumps and bruises. Thankfully, despite the early dangers, my parents recognized that my curiosity was an asset. Instead of squashing it, they helped me develop critical thinking skills to harness my curiosity so I could continue to explore, investigate, grow and discover. These skills have been my constant companions through the years, and they are traits that I foster in my teaching and rely on while guiding my students down their personal road to discovery.
My approach to teaching has helped build critical skill sets in my students and ignited their passion for their professional fields, with many of my former students comprising a significant percentage of music educators in the region. Additionally, UWF Williams School of Music graduates are contributing in their communities across the U.S. and abroad with discoveries as educators, performers, military musicians, lawyers, computer science and medical professionals. I often encourage students to find a profession that is engaging and rewarding. Whatever it is, if you can get up almost every day thinking, “I can’t wait to get to work today,” you’ve discovered a major component of success. I am grateful to work in an institution where I not only encourage discovery within my students, but also am allowed to develop and grow in my own discoveries. For example, this academic year I had the privilege of receiving the UWF Faculty Excellence in Teaching award.
Several years ago, I had the honor of composing the words and music for the UWF Argo Fight Song, and I believe it encapsulates what it means to be an Argo, regardless of major or discipline. “Argos clad in green and blue”: Argos are fortified with knowledge, experience, growth and discovery gained from their time at UWF. “Standing steadfast, valiant and true”: Argos project confidence, courageousness, determination and boldness in all they do. “Strength and might, an awesome sight, The Pride of West Florida”: Argos are an inspiring force who represent themselves and the University well. “Lift your voice in praise and song”: Argos commend the institution for the opportunities it has afforded them. “Brave and fearless, Argo strong”: Argos advance with purpose and certainty in search of new experiences, which lead to further growth and discovery. “Deep within each Argo beats the Heart of a Champion!”: By their very nature, Argos are strong, resilient, determined, supportive and committed to excellence.
