Neslihan Suhi-Moore

Captain, Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office

Neslihan Suhi-Moore never aspired to be a police officer, but she discovered her passion for law enforcement during her undergraduate years at UWF. She has had an 18-year career with the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and was recently promoted to the rank of captain. Moore has taught courses at UWF since 2014, bringing her career full circle.

What course or professor at UWF helped prepare you for success in your career?

Dr. Kathy Johnson played a pivotal role during both of my degree programs. She was an amazing professor who truly cared about me and my education. She laid the educational groundwork that I still use today as a law enforcement officer and an adjunct instructor. She encouraged me every step of the way and gave me the confidence to pursue a career in law enforcement. Twenty years later, I know I can lean on her for guidance, encouragement and support.

What is the most challenging part of your job?

Law enforcement officers face daily challenges that can be emotionally and physically demanding. This career field exposes officers to a variety of situations which include high-stress circumstances and traumatic events. In most recent times, the world of law enforcement has faced such hardship and negativity. Strong leaders in law enforcement are needed now more than ever. As a leader, I am always striving to inspire positive change, foster accountability and set the example for new officers.

What advice do you have for students who hope to pursue a career in law enforcement?

Law enforcement is such a rewarding job. We have the opportunity to make a positive impact on so many people’s lives. It is important for individuals entering this career field to have a strong moral compass. The law enforcement field can be demanding, and I would tell them to aim for a solid educational foundation, which will help them develop their skills in problem-solving and critical thinking.
