“FUN WITH SCIENCE!”
The University of West Florida Department of Chemistry in conjunction with the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) will offer “Fun with Science!” sessions this fall for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. Led by UWF science faculty members, “Fun with Science!” sessions are held from 9 to 11 a.m. on one Saturday a month during the school year on the UWF Pensacola Campus in Building 58A, Room 101. Dates and sessions are Sept. 20, “Chemistry of Fireworks;” Oct. 18, “National Chemistry Week;” Nov. 15, “Physics;” and Dec. 6, “Plant Biology.” “There is a severe shortage of students interested in pursuing careers in science or engineering in the U.S.,” said Michael Huggins, chair of the UWF Department of Chemistry. “This program is an attempt to show students the fun side of science and hopefully inspire them to be future scientists.” There will be a brief introductory lecture for each session followed by an activity period where students will perform hands-on experiments appropriate for their age group. Sponsored by International Paper, Pensacola Mill, the sessions are limited to 50 participants. Participants must register for the sessions in advance and registration will be separate for each individual session. For more information or to register, contact Cindy Williams at (850)
