My research interests focus on improving laboratory diagnostics for diabetes and prediabetes. Diabetes mellitus is a serious concern for Americans, and its prevalence is almost double in the African American community. Another health concern for African Americans is sickle cell anemia; approximately 1 in 12 African Americans is a carrier for the disease. The current project underway in my lab is funded by the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. This project examines the influence of sickle cell trait - in the form of Hemoglobin S - on the accuracy of the widely used monitoring test for diabetes called Hemoglobin A1c.
