Counseling Concentration

The Counseling Psychology Concentration is a 60 semester hour specialization that is designed for individuals seeking to pursue a variety of careers in the mental health and human services professions. With a master's degree in mental health counseling, our graduates have obtained employment in diverse settings such as community mental health centers, hospitals, universities, substance abuse rehabilitation programs, state and federal correctional facilities, and social service agencies. Many of our graduates later complete requirements for state licensure, and pursue private clinical practice in Florida or other states. Some students have successfully utilized their degree as a foundation to pursue doctoral education in clinical or counseling psychology (Ph.D. / Psy.D.), or related fields.

The Counseling Psychology Concentration meets all educational and clinical requirements established by the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling. Attainment of the degree does not entail conferral of the license, which is governed by the state licensing board. Upon graduation from the program, students qualify to register with the state licensing board as an intern and to obtain the two year post-degree supervised experience required for licensure. The program meets all standards of the Masters in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC). This accrediting body emphasizes the scientist-practitioner model of applied psychological training. MPCAC requires that we provide the following information about our program. For the 2016 - 2017 year ending May 31:

Number of completed applications: 35
Number of applicants admitted: 18
Number of applicants who accepted offer of admission: 10
Number of applicants who enrolled in the program, Fall 2016: 9
Number of students who graduated 2016-2017: 6

Practicum-Internship Capstone

For their required practicum and internship activities, our students successfully secure training positions in a variety of mental health agencies and hospitals in the Pensacola and Northwest Florida areas. The range of opportunities allows each student to obtain supervised clinical experiences in a setting that allows for their professional growth and pursuit of specialty interests.

In the 3-semester practicum and internship sequence, the student completes 1000 hours under the supervision of a mental health professional on-site (usually a licensed psychologist or mental health counselor), in addition to clinical faculty members who oversee the student's training experiences within the context of practicum/internship classes. During the course of this year-long experience, the student participates in clinical activities as a member of the professional mental health staff. Successful completion of practicum/internship may sometimes result in offers to join the agency in which they do their training.

Research Opportunities

We have an active faculty conducting a wide range of both basic and applied research. Their current research interests include topics such as: Child and Adolescent Assessment, Women’s Health, Domestic Violence, PTSD and Trauma, and HIV/AIDs Prevention and Intervention.

Students are consistently involved in faculty research and encouraged to pursue their own research interests. Their work is frequently presented at national and regional conferences and in some cases their work is published in refereed journals.
