0:12 When students get into the UWF teach 0:14 program after taking what we call an exploring inquiry teaching course um 0:16 usually after that course they have the 0:19 opportunity then to do a paid summer internship uh working with usually the 0:22 prospective population but you know students in general and then following 0:25 that usually in their Junior and senior years they have the opportunity to 0:27 undertake a citizen science project working with a science faculty member 0:29 and a high school middle school science teacher to develop lesson plans that 0:31 they will be able to use with their students uh in the classroom they also 0:33 get the opportunity to take teaching English as secondary language course and 0:34 sometimes um engage in a book club regarding issues of equity and diversity 0:37 we found especially with the scholar that the most impactful experience has 0:38 been the citizen science case in point uh is one of our graduates car 0:40 Montgomery who started working with a citizen science project you know as a 0:42 scholar and had the opportunity to continue it as a first year 1:00 teacher Cara M reach out to me and she's in the noise scholar program and we 1:02 filled out this giant Grant to try and get funding through the Southeastern 1:03 noise scholarship for us to afford the equipment in order to start her own 1:06 Marine Science Program in her department and so between that and and all the 1:09 other resources we have on campus we're going to try and bring the citizen 1:12 science aspect to the classroom since we can't bring the kids out in the field 1:15 with us uh we're going to bring them the water and let them use the microscopes 1:17 to identify microplastics maybe get fish involved later in the semester if 1:19 there's time we're not quite sure about this one and then kind of analyze that 1:23 data and see how students react to Citizen science and what their General 1:24 opinions are on it with the microplastic project we were able to uh make really 1:27 good lesson plans and Implement citizen science with the students and get them 1:30 into real life research and now I'm at Pine Forest High School I'm a biology 1:33 and Anatomy teacher at Pine Forest High School and all in all it helped me 1:37 better try to implement real world situations of real life problems of 1:40 having my students do in class field work with the students 1:43 there bring being able to bring Research into the classroom addresses know those 1:46 issues of equity some students might not have the opportunity or exposure to 1:48 research outside of that classroom and it also helps them as St Majors know 1:51 still continue to be engaged with science while they're also being 2:47 educators
