Software Engineering

The Master of Science in Computer Science - Software Engineering specialization concentrates on the process, specification, analysis, design, implementation, verification, validation, and software project management for the development of high-quality software systems that meet the needs of the clientele.

Program Description

Through this online program students have the opportunity to apply and advance their skills in one of the nation's fastest growing professions. Students will learn the skills necessary to develop innovative software systems that meet user needs. This program is designed for both veteran software developers and those new to the field. Highlights of this program include:

  • Core SE principles and focus: Students will learn topics in key areas of software engineering, including software process, requirements and analysis, software design and architecture, software testing, software engineering practice, and data storage and retrieval.
  • Foundational course series: New developers will benefit from our foundational courses in software programming, operating systems, and computer networking.
  • Project and Thesis options: Students interested in pursuing areas of research in software engineering may choose to complete a two semester thesis, while students looking for a more industrial focus may choose a project route.
  • 100% online program: All software engineering master's courses are conducted online. The degree earned from this program will be identical to the one earned by our resident students.

Catalog Description

This program is for anyone who wishes to stay competitive in industry and be a technical leader in their organization.

"Employment of software developers is projected to grow 17 percent from 2014 to 2024...the main reason for the rapid growth is a large increase in the demand for computer software."

Admissions Requirements

In addition to the University graduate admission requirements, the department bases decisions for regular admission on a holistic review of credentials in which the criteria listed below are used to assess the potential success of each applicant.

University Requirements*

  • Submission of Graduate Application and Processing Fee
  • Submission of official transcripts
    *International students may have additional requirements.

Departmental Requirements

  • Submission of graduate admission tests: GRE (145 quantitative and 150 verbal) or MAT (370)
  • Undergraduate cumulative GPA/major GPA
  • Submission of letter of intent describing work experience and reasons for pursuing the degree program, including how the degree relates to career goals
  • Submission of three signed recommendation letters
