Vision

The vision of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is to be recognized in the state of Florida and the nation for its outstanding undergraduate teaching and outreach programs, and for the quality, character, and integrity of its graduates and faculty.

Mission and Purpose

The mission of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is to offer baccalaureate degree programs of excellence in engineering that serve the needs of the West Florida region, the state, and the nation. The goal of the baccalaureate degree programs is to prepare students to embark upon a professional career in mechanical engineering or to pursue graduate study. The department will seek ABET accreditation for the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering program as soon as it graduates its first cohort of students or shortly thereafter.


Mechanical Engineering Student Outcomes

The faculty has adopted the engineering criteria for student outcomes, namely:

  • An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
  • An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
  • An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
  • An ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams
  • An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
  • An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
  • An ability to communicate effectively
  • The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
  • A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
  • A knowledge of contemporary issues
  • An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice

Mechanical Engineering Program Objectives

Graduates will be known for their accomplishments in the early stage of their careers and they should:

  • Develop mechanical engineering solutions either individually or through interdisciplinary teams within a global and societal context.
  • Professionally and ethically, engage in technical or business activity through engineering ability, communication skills, and knowledge.
  • Continue professional growth through post-graduate education, continuing education, or professional activity.
  • Contribute to the Northwest Florida regional economic development.
