UWF Isolation and Quarantine Protocol
The below protocol was developed based on guidance from the Florida Department of Health and guidance from the CDC.
What is the difference between quarantine and isolation?
Isolation separates people who are infected with the virus from people who are not infected (people with symptoms and people who have tested positive).
Quarantine keeps someone who might have been exposed to the virus away from others (people who have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19).
Isolation - Isolate if you are infected
Isolation is used to separate people infected with the virus (those who are sick with COVID-19 and those with no symptoms) from people who are not infected.
People who are in isolation should stay home until it’s safe for them to be around others. In the home, anyone sick or infected should separate themselves from others by staying in a specific “sick room” or area and using a separate bathroom (if available).
Who needs to isolate?
People who have COVID-19
- People who have symptoms of COVID-19 and are able to recover at home.
- People who have no symptoms (are asymptomatic) but have tested positive for COVID-19.
Steps to take
Stay home except to get medical care
- Monitor your symptoms. If you have an emergency warning sign (including trouble breathing), seek emergency medical care immediately.
- Stay in a separate room from other household members, if possible.
- Use a separate bathroom, if possible.
- Avoid contact with other members of the household and pets.
- Don’t share personal household items, like cups, towels, and utensils.
- Wear a cloth face covering when around other people, if able.
When to end isolation:
When you can be around others (end home isolation) depends on different factors for different situations.
I think or know I had COVID-19, and I had symptoms
You can be with others after
- 24 hours with no fever and
- Respiratory symptoms have improved and
- 10 days since symptoms first appeared
Depending on your healthcare provider’s advice and availability of testing, you might get tested to see if you still have COVID-19. If you will be tested, you can be around others when you have no fever, respiratory symptoms have improved,
I tested positive for COVID-19 but had no symptoms
If you continue to have no symptoms, you can be with others after:
- 10 days have passed since the test date
Depending on your healthcare provider’s advice and availability of testing, you might get tested to see if you still have COVID-19.
If you develop symptoms after testing positive, follow the guidance above for "I think or know I had COVID, and I had symptoms."
If you are still experiencing symptoms after the 10 days of isolation, do not return to campus and contact Case Management (students) or Human Resources (employees) for additional guidance.
Quarantine - Quarantine if you might be sick
Quarantine is used to keep someone who might have been exposed to COVID-19 away from others. Quarantine helps prevent the spread of disease that can occur before people know they are sick or if they are infected with the virus without feeling symptoms. People in quarantine should stay home, separate themselves from others, monitor their health, and follow directions from their state or local health department.
Who needs to quarantine?
Anyone who has been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19.
This includes people who previously had COVID-19 and people who have taken a serologic (antibody) test and have antibodies to the virus.
What counts as close contact?
- You were within 6 feet of someone who has COVID-19 for at least 15 minutes.
- You provided care at home to someone who is sick with COVID-19.
- You had direct physical contact with the person (touched, hugged, or kissed them).
- You shared eating or drinking utensils.
- They sneezed, coughed or somehow got respiratory droplets on you.
Steps to take
Stay home and monitor your health
- Stay home for 10 days after your last contact with a person who has COVID-19.
- Watch for fever (100.4◦F), cough, shortness of breath or other symptoms of COVID-19.
- If possible, stay away from others, especially people who are at higher risk for getting very sick from COVID-19.
Counseling and Psychological Services
UWF Counseling and Psychological Services will provide support for students in isolation quarantine through an optional virtual Isolation/Quarantine Drop-In Peer Support Space. This will be open on Mondays from 2-3:30 p.m. CST and Wednesdays from 3-4:30 p.m. CST. To join the discussion, simply click on the link during one of the time periods. Student Health Services
If you are still experiencing symptoms at the end of your isolation period, or if you have developed symptoms during isolation, or if you need assistance with any medical or health issue, visit the Student Health Services webpage or call at 850.474.2172.

Housing and Residence Life
Housing and Residence Life staff are available to assist during this time.
For students with dining plans, a Food Pack (equivalent of 3 meals) will be delivered each afternoon at 5 p.m. Those without dining plans will have the ability to purchase a 50-block meal plan or utilize food available. Other options include having friends deliver food or utilize delivery. If the 50-block meal plan is purchased, it will be delivered daily by Housing and Residence Life.
Garbage service will be provided on Tuesdays and Fridays. Place your garbage outside your door on those days by 9 a.m., but please do not leave it out overnight.
Housing and Residence Life staff will provide a daily "phone check-in" to all students in isolation and will be available to all isolation or quarantine students through our regular on-call service.
