The Department of Instructional Design and Technology is comprised of faculty and staff who support the mission of the School of Education through teaching, scholarly activities, and service. To fulfill this mission, the department focuses on developing synergy between academic innovation and applied development, as well as a strong research agenda to support the preparation of empowered professionals who serve as educational leaders.


Our Mission

The mission of the Department of Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) is to prepare education, training, military, healthcare, and business and industry professionals to solve complex organizational problems through the application of instructional, non-instructional and/or technology-based solutions.

To meet the preparation mission, a strong teaching focus prepares our students for their careers with a solid educational foundation, applicable to multiple career paths. 


Degrees in Instructional Design and Technology

The Department of Instructional Design and Technology offers a full suite of fully online degrees in instructional design and technology: Bachelor of Science in IDT, Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Instructional Design and Performance Technology, and Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in Instructional and Peformance Technology.

The IDT curriculum emphasizes collaborative and individualized projects. Students learn skills that they can immediately apply to real-world problems, guided by experienced, responsive, and caring faculty who provide one-on-one feedback to every student.

Carnegie Project for the Education Doctorate (CPED)

The University of West Florida is a member institution of the Carnegie Project for the Education Doctorate (CPED). This selective membership includes colleges and universities committed to undertaking a critical examination on the education doctorate through dialog, experimentation, critical feedback, and evaluation.
