The History and Archaeology of Ship Abandonment at Shields Point

Paul Goodwin Sjordal

The results of historical and archaeological investigation of the Shields Point abandonment site reveal dramatic change in the function of the site through time based on significant changes in the local economy and rapid changes in vessel construction and propulsion. The result of the analysis provides positive identification of three of the vessels and the likely identification of the remaining four vessels that were abandoned at Shields Point. This analysis also allows for better understanding of the site formation processes involved in the creation of this unique site.
