Searching for Women at the Presidio Santa Maria de Galve: A New Approach to Examining Women Through Material Cultural and History

Cynthia Lee Smith Sims

Searching for women in the historical and archaeological records at Santa María de Galve required the use of a new approach. Historical popular religion was used to examine Spanish customs as reflected in the archaeological record. Significant items within the excavated assemblage were extracted to identify the presence or absence of women. The items used in Catholic rituals were considered and used to interpret the presence of women in this study. Viewing the archaeological record of personal and kitchen items related to female activities through the lens of popular religion has allowed us to see women more clearly at Santa María. The focus has been especially sharp in viewing the, special function ceramics, Guadalajara Polychrome and religious cultural material.
