On October 8, 2008, the University of West Florida and the Next Generation Learning Community (NGLC) of Northwest Florida sponsored a meeting between the Ford Partnership for Advanced Studies (Ford PAS) Team (Richard Delano, Cheryl Carrier, and Janet Padilla) and workforce partners, including representatives from business, the school districts, and higher education. UWF hosted the meeting, which was held in the College of Professional Studies conference room (see photos below).

What Is Ford PAS? Ford PAS is an educational program sponsored by Ford Motor Company to encourage high school students to develop the skills necessary to be successful in the 21st century workforce. The five semester-long courses in this project-based curriculum are built around three key learning pillars:
|
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the implementation of the Ford PAS curriculum in our local school districts and the possibility of designating UWF as a Ford PAS Training and Resource Center. With the implementation of the academy concept, the Ford PAS curriculum dovetails nicely with the overall educational goals of the Santa Rosa and Escambia County School Districts. The Training and Resource Center at UWF would then extend learning beyond the classroom by developing opportunities in the community for students to apply what they what they are learning in the classroom to real-world settings. These opportunities would make what they are learning more meaningful and would clearly demonstrate the value of the knowledge they were gaining.
One of the primary outcomes of the meeting was to identify the next steps the NW FL Next Generation Learning Community will take to further enhance the cooperative efforts addressing the needs of business, education, and workforce.
