Oceanographic Techniques

Principal Investigator: Wade H. Jeffrey, PhD

Support Agency: Florida Institute of Oceanography

Location of Study: Northern Gulf of Mexico

This project provides funding and support for three days of oceanographic shiptime aboard the RV BELLOWS to be used for teaching and training our undergraduate and graduate students. The cruise proposed herein is to be used strictly as a teaching experience for students enrolled in our Experimental Oceanography course. The University of West Florida offers a degree program in Marine Biology which requires upper level course work in marine electives. In recent years new courses have been designed to increase student exposure to the marine sciences.
An integral part of our courses is an understanding of how oceanographic research is conducted and how samples are collected and analyzed. The proposed cruise will provide an overview of general biological sampling methodologies. Demonstrations of both water column and benthic sampling procedures will be made and water column samples will be collected during an onshore to offshore transect.
