A female student was robbed at gunpoint Sunday outside of
the Village West Apartments, according to crime reports.
The student, Raby Valerie, was standing outside of the apartment's
Building D at the time of the incident.
At 11:09 p.m., an unidentified male tapped the victim on
her shoulder. The male may have been carrying a .25 caliber,
semi-automatic handgun.
Reports claim the suspect began to pull on Valerie's book
bag then began to scream and eventually let go of the bag.
Valerie fell to the ground after she let go of the bag. According
to Police Sergeant David Faircloth, the student victim received
minor scratches from the fall.
Witness Maximilian Metzger heard screaming and went to the
scene of the crime. According to reports, Metzger noticed
the unidentified suspect leave in a car with three other
males.
The males were identified as two black males, one white male,
and one Hispanic male. According to Faircloth, the male suspects
may have been riding in a Mazda 626 LX.
During the investigation, Faircloth said that the county's
sheriff department has also been informed of the incident,
although there is no indication of similar armed robberies
in the county.
Faircloth as well as other campus police officers have reason
to believe the suspects are not UWF students.
The UWF Police Department suggests that students be aware
of what is going on around them when walking to and from
class. Faircloth suggests students walk with others and not
ignore screams.
While the police department is taking the armed robbery seriously,
so are students.
“
I don't lock my door, but I may now,” said legal studies
major, Chris Olson.
Other students are not very surprised that the robbery took
place at all.
“
I figured it would happen. It is bound to on a college campus,” said
freshman, Matt Peterson.
The University police hope to catch the suspects, so that
justice may be served.
