John's Teaching Philosophy:

I believe in teaching by example.  I try to give my students as many
opportunities as possible to see how I work and see some of the possibilities available to them as an artist and educator.  I stress the need to often work "smarter" instead of "harder" by learning to ask yourself tough questions about the work you are making.  Technique (materials and processes) and concepts (subject matter and ideas) must work together in a strong work of art and students should learn the various ways of combining the two.
