ETHICS IN BUSINESS AWARDS HONOR MALCOLM BALLINGER AND ROBERT HARRIMAN
PENSACOLA -- The University of West Florida College of Business and the Combined Rotary Clubs of Pensacola recognized Malcolm Ballinger, owner and publisher of Ballinger Publishing and Robert Harriman, senior vice president, Baptist Healthcare, at the seventh annual "Combined Rotary of Pensacola Ethics in Business Award" May 4 at New World Landing. Ballinger and Harriman were recognized as individuals who exemplify the concept of "service above self" and who have worked to build a positive sense of worth in the business community and the broader community as a whole.
"This is the seventh year the Combined Rotary and UWF College of Business have recognized business leaders for their commitment to high ethical standards in the operation of their business," said Ed Ranelli, dean of the College of Business. "Malcolm Ballinger and Robert Harriman are outstanding role models for business leaders and their successful careers illustrate how 'service above self' and high business ethics advance our community."
As the publisher and owner of Ballinger Publishing, Ballinger was recognized for making local charities and non-profits a priority. He consistently provides media sponsorships to non-profits that include donated advertising space, editorial coverage and inclusion in Ballinger's many cultural calendars and event listings. He makes sure that the public stays informed on the ways they can help and enjoy local organizations. In addition, he and his wife Glenys Ballinger spend a large portion of their personal time giving back to the community through a variety of arts organizations and charities such as the Pensacola Opera, Gulf Coast Kids House, ARC Gateway and Big Brothers Big Sisters. As an employer, Ballinger encourages his employees to become involved in the community. He invites employees to attend charity functions and encourages communication between his staff and the staffs of local non-profits.
Harriman was recognized for his servant-leadership style and his leadership by example. As senior vice president and administrator for Baptist Healthcare, Gulf Breeze Hospital and the Andrews Institute, he balances a huge amount of responsibility and yet continues to focus on a commitment to excellence. He has helped to create a service-oriented culture of excellence among employees and a commitment to providing the highest level of customer service and satisfaction, best technology and superior quality healthcare for patients and families. Harriman is also committed to meeting the growing healthcare needs of the poor and uninsured.
Nominees were selected based on the following criteria: adherence to high ethical standards of honesty, integrity and consistency in dealing with employees, contractors and customers, while positively enhancing the economic well-being of the firm's stakeholders and providing jobs, opportunities and profits; participation in activities that are beneficial to the community beyond the provision of economic benefits; and service as a leader or innovator in the firm's business sector.
