UWF PEOPLE IN THE NEWS
Students in the News University of West Florida journalism student J.R. Williams, was awarded the Pat Lloyd Scholarship for 2007-2008 by the Tiger Bay Club. Williams has served as opinions page editor and editor in chief of "The Voyager," the UWF student newspaper.
Twenty-two students in Julie Ann Williams' Operations Management business course recently toured Wayne Dalton's Pensacola plant to learn more about operations management. The tour provided an opportunity for students to understand process strategies, manufacturing, assembly, material handling, storage systems and quality control. Fourteen UWF Emerald Coast Operations Management business course students toured Chromalloy Florida's Fort Walton Beach plant to observe operations management principles in practice.
Seven undergraduate students and two faculty members from the UWF Chemistry Department attended the 233rd National American Chemical Society meeting in Chicago, Ill. March 25 through 29. Patrick Barber presented a poster of his research results entitled "Using Acetoacetamides in the Syntheses of Pyrrole Amides" from the research lab of Michael Huggins, chemistry. Katherine Davis presented her research poster titled "Quantification of Photochemically Produced Hydroxyl Radical from Chlorinated Quinone Pesticides" based on her experiences with Pamela Vaughan, chemistry. In addition, Huggins gave an oral presentation of research data gathered by UWF undergraduate students. This work was also recently submitted for publication in the "Journal of Organic Chemistry."
The UWF Baseball team won its first Gulf South Conference Championship with a six to one victory over top-seeded West Alabama May 9 at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn. The team is now guaranteed a spot in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament for the first time in school history.
Faculty/Staff in the News Scott Keller, marketing and logistics, has been appointed to the "Transportation Journal" Editorial Review Board. The journal is the leading journal for domestic and international transportation research.
Keith and Stacie Whinnery, special education, had their article "MOVE: Systematic Programming for Early Motor Intervention" published in "Infants and Young Children." The article was also selected as one of the two articles to be posted on the International Society on Early Intervention (ISEI) Web site that is used by 1,800 association members from 80 countries.
UWF political science students attended the Florida Political Science Association Conference in Orlando held March 30 and 31. Travis Braidwood presented his paper, "A Lost Cause or Determining the Course: A Study of the Recent Impact of Third Parties in the United States;" Ryan Cunningham and Jacob Brennan, with Assistant Processor Jocelyn Evans, government, as co-author, presented "Women in Electoral Combat: The Frontlines of Republican Gains and Losses in Congress, 1992 - 2006;" Holly Griffin presented "Women in Executive Office: A Comparative Study of Women's Political Ascension in the U.S., Great Britain, and Germany;" Douglas Mock presented "Presidential Power During Wartime: Historical Understandings and Judicial Interpretations;" Olivia Largergren presented "Party Culture and Women's State Legislative Participation: A Case Study of the Wisconsin and Oklahoma Lower Houses;" and Joseph Smallen presented "Extending the Marginality Debate to the U.S. Senate: 1978 - 2006." Chairperson Alfred Cuzan, political science, presented "Revisiting Do We Ever Get Out of Anarchy." Cuzán will also participate in a two-week summer institute for college teachers, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities, "The Continuing Significance of Tocqueville's 'Democracy in America,'" at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn.
