Samuel Park, Music Performance, won first prize at the Florida State Young Artist Competition Oct. 28. The event is sponsored by the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). He will go on to represent the state of Florida in February 2007 at the MTNA 9-State Regional Competition. The winner of the regional competition will participate in the MTNA national finals March 23 through 27, 2007. This year's competition was the second year that both UWF and Park participated, last year Park earned second place.

John Bratten and Greg Cook, UWF Archaeology Institute, received $203,368 from the Florida Division of Historic Preservation for a project titled "Emanuel Point Underwater Archaeology" to conduct an underwater archaeological survey of the site of the Emanuel Point Shipwreck. Located in Pensacola Bay near Emanuel Point, this shipwreck is believed to be associated with Tristan de Luna's attempt to colonize Pensacola in 1559. The proposed survey will include a systematic remote sensing survey of the area, ground truth through visual inspection of all anomalies to determine their extent and test excavations to document their nature.
Fernaundra Ferguson, Criminal Justice and Legal Studies, was elected to national board of directors for the Association for Conflict Resolution, the national organization for conflict resolution professionals.
Scott Keller, Marketing and Economics, received the "Best Reviewer Award" from the Supply Chain Management and Industrial Distribution Symposium at the Annual Society of Marketing Advances Annual Conference. His research was featured in the fall issue of "CTSI Logistics Forum," a publication distributed to logistics executives across the country. Keller was a panel member and discussed the new UWF Certificate in Supply Chain Logistics at the Supply Chain Management and Industrial Distribution Symposium at the Annual Society of Marketing Advances Annual Conference. He also had a book review published on "Trucking in the Age of Information" in the "Transportation Journal."
Julie Ann Stuart Williams, Management and Management Information Systems, published "An Automotive Bulk Recycling Planning Model" in the "European Journal of Operational Research 177(2007) 969-981 Production, Manufacturing and Logistics." Ray Uzwyshyn, Digital and Learning Technologies, was presented with an "Award of Appreciation and Service" by the American Society of Information Science and Technology in Austin, Texas Nov. 7 at the society's annual conference, "Information Realities: Shaping the Digital Future" in appreciation of his work with ASIS&T's Special Interest Group in Visualization, Images and Sound (SIGVIS, 2002-2006). Charles Wentz, associate professor emeritus, Engineering and Computer Technology, presented "A High School Program that Works for Career-Oriented Young People" at the National Social Science Association conference held Oct. 15 through 17 in San Francisco, Calif. Pat Wentz, Professional and Community Leadership, presented "District Accreditation: The Latest in PK-12 Accreditation" at the National Social Science Association conference held Oct. 15 through 17 in San Francisco, Calif.
The UWF College of Business published the first issue of the "Journal of Business Issues" in November. As a refereed academic journal sponsored by the College of Business, the journal is dedicated to excellence in business and publishes articles of interest to the business community and business faculty members. It is edited by James Hasselback, UWF faculty member and Mary Ball Washington Eminent Scholar. The journal is available on College of Business Web site.
The entire staff of UWF Postal Services received certification as Mailpiece Quality Control Specialists (MQC's) Nov. 15. Awarded by the U.S. Postal Service, the certification trains employees to become experts in the high-quality design, preparation and qualification of all classes of U.S mail, enabling them to advise and assist UWF departments and other mailers concerning mail requirements.
