Social Work Field Education
Field Education is an integral component of Department Work Education, anchored in the mission, goals, and educational objectives of the program. It occurs in settings that reinforce students’ identification with the purposes, values, and ethics of the profession; fosters the integration of empirical and practice-based knowledge; and promotes the developments and enhancement of clinical social work knowledge and skills.
The field practicum requires a commitment by the student to ensure the integration of the skills necessary to practice in the social work profession. This may require students to make adjustments in their current employment and personal schedules.
Students may complete the MSW degree (63 credit hours) on a full-time or part-time basis. The School also offers an Advanced Standing Program for individuals with a baccalaureate degree in Social Work (BSW) received within the past five years from a program accredited by the CSWE. Students accepted into the Advanced Standing Program can receive up to 31 credit hours toward the MSW degree.
Students in the Advanced Standing track complete 600 hours of field internship over two semesters. Students in the Full-Time track and Part-Time track complete 900 hours of field internship over three semesters.

- Title IV-E Child Welfare Education Stipend MSW Program
- Title IV-E of the Social Security Act provides federal matching funds to states for directly administering the Foster Care and Adoption Assistance programs. Its objective is to improve the quality of care of children in foster care, reduce the number of children in foster care, return children to their homes as soon as conditions permit, and facilitate the adoption or permanent placement of children who cannot be returned to their homes. The purpose of the program is to educate and train social work graduates to work as child welfare professionals in the areas of foster care and adoption. The program is seen as a win-win situation, as students see the program as obtaining specialized professional training in child welfare with post graduation employment while local agencies view the program as a way to hire qualified child welfare professionals. For information about this program, contact Dr. Laura D. Edler (ledler1@uwf.edu) (850) 474-2375.
