According to Charles-Edward Amory Winslow, public health is defined as "the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals." In contrast to the medical paradigm of health care, public health focuses on health promotion and disease and injury prevention. Because of this holistic, preventative approach, public health plays a crucial role in emergency readiness and response.
