A certificate in Health Care Ethics consists of four (4) courses that may be taken as a non-degree seeking or degree-seeking student, or as a continuing education student. All area health care practitioners or students of health care are encouraged to enroll and may enter at any time. The focus of this certificate is on critical ethical issues facing health care providers, patients, and their families.

The Certificate consists of four related courses that deal with currently important issues in health care ethics:

• Current Issues in Medicine - This course focuses on an examination of philosophical issues that arise in conceptualizing the aims and practices of medicine.
• Life, Illness and Death - This course will explore conflicting world views related to the confrontation of illness, suffering, and death in the health care setting. Clinically relevant cases will be employed.
• Theoretical Foundations of Health Care Ethics - This is a course illuminating major ethical theories and their relation to health care ethics. The application and viability of these theoretical models will be tested with respect to training and professional practice in health care.
• Clinical Ethics Grand Rounds - Students will participate in grand rounds with specified health care professionals. In response to various cases presented at ethics grand rounds, students will participate in mock round table bioethics consultations and committees. A clinical ethics case study is required.

Announcements

Graduate students in the Master's program in Health Education within the Aging Studies specialization and in the Certificate Program in Aging Studies are now required to take the course HSC 5602 Life, Illness, and Death. Graduate students interested in specializing in Health Care Ethics also have the opportunity to do so through the Master's degree in Communications Leadership available through the Communications Arts Department. Please contact the program director, Athena DuPre, for more information.

Undergraduate students interested in specializing in Health Care Ethics have the opportunity to do so.  A Health Care Ethics track is offered through a B.S. in Health Sciences degree via the School of Allied Health and Life Sciences. News

Josh Woods and Samantha Cohen Mahoney were the 2007 Reubin Askew Fellows in Health Care Ethics. Josh is a graduate of Southeastern University and a graduate student in Health Care Ethics at UWF. Samantha is a graduate of F.S.U. and a graduate student in Aging Studies and a certificate student in Health Care Ethics at UWF. Josh interned in Medical Ethics with Dr. Arnold under the former Center for Health Care Ethics and Samantha interned with Dr. Arnold, Erin Bowers and Katy Levan at Sacred Heart in the area of ethics and palliative care.

Internship

The Association for Health Care Ethics and Sacred Heart are now offering conjointly an internship in palliative care and health care ethics under the supervision of Erin Bowers, Sacred Heart Palliative Care Manager. Graduate students interested in this Internship should contact the Center Director. Training is on site at Sacred Heart Hospital.

The Association has established The Reubin O'D. Askew Award in Health Care Ethics through the kindness of an anonymous donor. Honoring the contributions and integrity of the former Governor of Florida and ambassador, the Askew Award is given to the graduate student whose academic achievement and depth of service in health care ethics is superlative.
