Important Requirements for Students Receiving DVA Benefits
The Veterans Services Office (VSO)
no longer provides a written booklet of guidelines and procedures
for VA students. Each VA student is responsible for the information
provided by the VSO and the information in the UWF
Catalog. Additional information for VA students is also
published on this VSO
WEB SITE or e-mail veterans@uwf.edu.
Please feel free to contact the VSO at 850-474-2262 with any questions
you may have. It is the student's responsibility to notify the UWF
Veterans Services Office of the following:
- Enrollment Certification
After registering, eligible beneficiaries must visit the UWF Veterans
Services Office to complete necessary paperwork. In most cases,
the earlier a student registers, provides a copy of the registration
fee schedule, and completes other local information, the earlier
certification paperwork can be forwarded to the DVA.
Each VA student must initiate enrollment certification at the
beginning of each semester. Students currently enrolled can do
a VA Enrollment Certification online via
Argus
on the "My Info" tab
or use the PRINTABLE FORM
to certify.
- Program Description Sheet
(PDS)
A PROGRAM DESCRIPTION SHEET (PDS) is a list
of courses required by a student for the degree program he or
she is pursuing. A first time student may enroll for classes without
a PDS on file with the VSO. After the first term of enrollment,
the student must present the VSO with a PDS. The PDS must be
signed by his or her advisor indicating the courses credited
by previous training and courses required to complete the
degree program.
The VA student will be certified only for those courses listed
on his or her PDS. The VA will not grant entitlement for course
work not listed on the PDS unless the student's advisor documents
the course is part of the degree program. A course substitution
on the original PDS is a common reason for such documentation.
-
Changes to Schedule
Any changes to the students schedule (additions, drops, withdrawals,
or other interruptions) not processed on-line via
Argus
on the "My Info" tab
must be reported in writing within one week of the change to
the UWF Veterans Services Office.
-
Failure to Attend Class
Routine class attendance is required for those receiving
DVA benefits. If a student is unable to attend class for an
extended period of time, he/she must notify the instructor and
the UWF Veterans Services Office.
- Change of Major
VA students need to visit the VSO anytime they make a
major change.
Change of Address A separate change of address must be filed with the DVA
and the University Registrar’s office. (Both forms are
available at the UWF Veterans Services Office and students may
change their UWF address on-line through
Argus
on the "My Info" tab.)
DVA notification may also be done by e-mailing the DVA at
atlrpo@vba.va.gov
or calling (888) 442-4554. Expeditious notification will speed
payment of benefits.
- Tuition deferment
VA students can receive a tuition deferment once each
academic year. The deferment is used to defray the cost of tuition
for 60 days from the date all fees are due. Extensions may granted
on an individual basis and under strict guidelines beyond the
60 days for first term VA students. Students must apply in person
during the first week of classes. Extensions must be applied for
in person prior to expiration of a deferment only if student hasn’t
started to receive benefits.
- Dual Degrees (Major and Minors)
VA Students desiring to receive VA benefits for dual degrees
must get approval from the VA State Approving Agency before benefits
can be paid for classes. Contact the VSO
for more information.
- Transient Students
VA students can only be paid for classes listed on their
PDS. Transient student must complete the Transient Student Forms
and obtain the signature of the academic advisor to verify courses
are required to graduate.
