DVA Educational Benefits Eligibility

CHAPTER 30: Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB)
Individuals who entered the military after July 1, 1985 may have elected to contribute to this program for the first twelve months of service, thus making them eligible for benefits under this chapter. Eligibility for the MGIB was also extended to many veterans having Chapter 34 (Vietnam Era GI Bill) eligibility remaining as of December 31, 1989. These veterans are generally referred to as Chapter 34/30 beneficiaries. Entitlements for Chapter 34/30 beneficiaries include monthly financial support that is adjusted for the number of dependents. For Chapter 30 beneficiaries, there may be service and program specific contributions, e.g., Army College Fund, etc., that may increase financial benefits. However, there is no increase in benefits for dependents.

CHAPTER 31: Vocational Rehabilitation
Veterans who have a service connected disability rated at ten percent or more which causes a demonstrable employment handicap are eligible to apply for this program. The UWF Veterans Services Office can supply the required forms, but the veteran must complete the application process which includes a variety of interviews. Veterans accepted for this program are assigned a DVA Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist who works closely with them throughout the program. Beneficiaries receive tuition, books, required supplies, and monthly financial benefits that are increased for dependents.

CHAPTER 32: Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP)
Veterans who first entered the military between January 1, 1977 and June 30, 1985 may be eligible for this program if they contributed $25 to $100 from their pay each month while on active duty. Entitlement rates depend upon the amount and length of contribution. There are no additional entitlements for the number of dependents.

CHAPTER 34: Vietnam Era GI Bill
This program has been discontinued. However Vietnam Era veterans may still receive benefits. See Chapter 30 description.

CHAPTER 35: Dependents Educational Assistance
This program provides educational benefits for the spouse and children of veterans who were permanently and totally disabled or died as a result of a service connected disability. The spouse and children of POW's and MIA's may also be eligible. Entitlement is not adjusted for number of dependents.

CHAPTER 1606: Selected Reserve
This program applies only to members of the Selected Reserve who on or after July 1, 1985 enlisted, extended an enlistment, or otherwise extended their obligation for a period totaling six years. Entitlement is not adjusted for number of dependents. Receipt of an ROTC scholarship or separation from the Selected Reserve terminates eligibility under this chapter.  There may be service and program specific "kickers" that may increase financial benefits.

Chapter 1607: Activated Reservists -- The new benefit, makes certain individuals who were activated after September 11, 2001 either eligible for education benefits or eligible for increased benefits.
