Make sure you read the entire lesson that accompanies these tasks:
  • Read peers' posts to the threaded discussion from Lesson 2 last week and reply to at least 3 peers.
  • Complete the  Chapter 3 Quiz
  • Complete the Chapter 4 Quiz
  • Identify a research topic in which you are currently interested.  Reflect on why this is interesting to you, how your interest developed, and why you think the research topic is important (both to you and the educational research community).  Write a paragraph or two addressing these areas and post it to this threaded discussion.
  • Identify at least 2 empirical research articles from refereed journals that are on the same topic as the one you identified in Lesson 1.  Via email, submit the complete reference in APA format (use your book) for these 2 articles. Appropriately include the url of the article using the APA guide if you found it online.
  • Choose one of the 2 empirical articles you identified in Lesson 2. Carefully read the article and identify the five elements of the "Statement of the Problem."  Mark the passages where the author identified a topic, stated the problem, provided justification, identified deficiencies and the importance of addressing them for specific audiences, and suggested the research approach.  Cut and paste these elements (or type them) into a word processing document and label them according to the element.  Discuss any elements that were left out. Apply APA formatting. Save the document and send it to me as an attachment via email.
4/ June 4 Analyzing and Synthesizing the Related Literature

Specifying a Purpose, Writing Research Questions and Hypotheses, and Writing a Research Proposal

Make sure you read the entire lesson that accompanies these tasks:
  • Read peers' posts to the threaded discussion from Lesson 2 last week. Try to find someone with similar interests that you could share resources as you find them.  If you happen to know of a good resource for someone else's topic let them know.
  • Complete the Chapter 5 Quiz
  • Complete the Chapter 10 Quiz
  • Identify at least 2 additional empirical research articles from refereed journals that are on the same topic as the one you identified last week (or a new topic if you have changed your mind) and the one that you found the 2 articles on last week.  Via email, submit the complete reference in APA format (use your book) for these 2 articles to your instructor. Include the url of the article if you found it online.
  • Write Section I of your research proposal and turn it in to your instructor.

Due in 2 weeks:

Ongoing

  • Continue to identify additional empirical research articles from refereed journals that are on your research topic.  If you continue to want confirmation that the articles you find are empirical and refereed, submit the complete reference in APA format (use your book) to your instructor. Include the url of the article if you found it online.
  • Continue working on your literature map.
  • Continue reading, abstracting, and analyzing any empirical articles you identify as relevant based on the criteria given in Chapter 4.
  • As you continue to identify, read, and analyze empirical research, use the guiding questions to try to group the studies according to subtopics, similarities, differences, etc. You may want to make notes about the major results or findings so that similarities and difference can be identified easily or highlight portions of each article that make suggestions for future research.
