General Instructions for Taking Quizzes

All tests in this course will be given using eLearning.  eLearning is a course management tool used for delivering online courses, and it has a variety of features.  The only features we will use in this course are the Testing and Chat options.  By virtue of being registered in this course you have access to the tests as I make them available.  The quizzes available for each Chapter in the Creswell text allow you to monitor your own comprehension of the text as you read it each week.  The completion of the quizzes are calculated as part of your final participation grade in this course. The purpose of the quizzes is to check your comprehension of the text and ability to apply concepts learned and to identify areas in which you may need to reread your text or ask for clarification from your instructor in order to continue with other assignments as well as do well on the final exam. Other graded assignments will be given that will ask you to apply the ideas and concepts within the chapter, therefore, it is essential that you understand the meaning of the concepts presented prior to their application in other assignments.

Before you take the first quiz, be sure to run a system check (you will see the link listed on the main page of the elearning system where you log in) on your computer prior to using the system to minimize any technical glitches you may have when completing quizzes.

All quizzes will be time-limited (which means that you have a specific amount of time to complete the quiz once you start it).  The time limit will be set according to the length of the quiz and types of items included.  This means that one week you may have 60 minutes while another week you may have 120 minutes.  When each quiz is introduced in a lesson, I will also indicate the time allotted for the quiz.

Once you start a quiz, there will be a clock for you to monitor your remaining time.  There is also a 5-minute grace period for that last save or click of the submit button.  The quizzes will be turned off at 5 PM CST on the day they are due.  No late quizzes will be accepted. (A quiz is considered late if it is submitted past the due date and time or after the time limit has expired.)

I strongly suggest that you save your quiz/answers as you go - there is a save button at each question.  There is also a save entire quiz option at the end of each quiz.  To complete and submit your quiz you must click on the submit quiz button at the bottom.  If you have technical questions about the quizzes, email Melissa.

Once you are ready to begin the Quiz, logon to eLearning.

  1. Select the "Quizzes" section.
  2. Select the Chapter Quiz you want to take (e.g. 'Chapter One'). Carefully watch the clock as you work through the quiz. Save as you go. Hit the Submit button when you are done.
  3. You can view your score on the Quiz immediately upon completing the quiz unless there are short-answer items that I must grade prior to providing a final score.  If there are items that I must grade manually, your score at the time you submit the quiz may not be your final score.

Notes:

  • Correct answers will not be made available until the following week when everyone has taken the quiz.
  • Open-ended quiz items (such as short-answer questions) must be graded manually. Fill-in-the-blank items are also manually reviewed and graded. If you missed a fill-in-the-blank item solely because you misspelled a word, you will receive credit for the item when I grade the quiz.

Specific Instructions for Chapter 12 Quiz

The quiz for this chapter contains short-answer questions. Follow these guidelines when answering short-answer questions:

  • Use your own words to answer the questions; do not quote from the textbook.  Your answer should reflect your comprehension of the material (rather than your ability to find a passage that addresses the question). You will not receive credit for responses that are plagiarized from the book.
  • If a question prompts you to "describe" or "explain" something, your answer should be descriptive or explanatory (i.e., your answer should typically consist of more than one sentence).  You should be concise in your response, but it should also fully answer the question.
  • Some questions have multiple parts. Make sure you answer all parts of each question.  If your answer does not address all parts of the question, you will not receive full credit for your response.
  • Use caution when providing examples in your answer (if an example is not specifically requested).  If you present an example or explanation that was not requested, and the information you presented was not entirely correct, you may lose points for your answer.

You must answer all of the short-answer questions to receive credit for taking the quiz.
