As many students go off to college much of the attention is focused on them and their transition. However, here at UWF we know that the family goes through a transition as well. That is the reason we created our Family Orientation. We believe that the family wants to know and understand this new place where their student will be attending. Parents and Guardians may have lots of questions. Brothers and sisters may have questions about this "college thing". There is often times much anxiety surrounding this life changing experience.
Families with Freshmen Students:We have a two day session for you that runs consecutively with the session your student will attend. The Family Orientation is not the same as the New Student Orientation. The two programs run independent of each other. Most of the time they are separate, however, there will be some times where the programs are together. During this orientation you will learn a great deal about the university, the services that are offered, and the academic rigor that will be required of your student. We hope that by the time you leave the orientation you are armed with the information you need to help your student. We realize you will be the first contact your son or daughter will make when there is trouble or concern. We want to make sure you have the information to point them in the right direction. Through orientation we hope that we create a working connection between the campus and the family. We believe we both have the same goal: To have a successful student. Make sure you child registers you when they sign up for New Student Orientation.
Families with Transfer Students:For many of our families whose student is a transfer this is old habit. You have already had a taste of what college life is like and you know what to expect. However, we do know that you may have some questions for the university. That is why we encourage you to attend Transfer Transition with your student. You will be in the sessions with your student and hearing the same information. During this session you can learn who the players are on the campus. You will be able to ask any questions you have to the presenters during this session. Make sure your child registers you when they sign up for Transfer Transition.
