National Disabilities Awareness Month Luncheon
On October 4, 2011, The Disabilities Summit Council will present the 7th Annual National Disabilities Awareness Month Luncheon at the Scenic Hills Country Club. For this event individuals will be honored for the hard work and services they've provided to people with disabilities. The Honorable Stephen R. Wise, Chairman, Senate Committee on Education, Pre-K through 12 will serve as the Master of Ceremonies.

Mentoring Day
On October 10, 2011, UWF Faculty, Staff and Students have volunteered to participate in a Mentoring Day Program in recognition of National Disability Awareness Month. Students from the Project Search Program will spend a day with their mentors. The students will be involved in shadowing and some hands on experiences in a professional work place. This learning experience will assist them with exploring their options in choosing a career, while also providing them with some employability skills. The mentoring will be 8:30 am to 11:45 am and from noon to 1:00 pm; then, they will participate in a facilitated discussion of their experience with Dr. Brian Turner, UWF Counseling & Wellness Center.

Wheelchair Basketball
On October 18, 2011, Dr. Judy Bense, UWF President, will read a Proclamation declaring October 18, 2011 as Disability Awareness Day at the University of West Florida. Following the declaration, UWF will host the Mobile Patriots for its 10th Annual Wheelchair Basketball Game. The game will take place in the UWF Field House from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The Patriots will play four 15 minute quarters against the UWF Faculty/Staff Team, Army ROTC Team, Air Force ROTC Team, Greek Organizations Team, Media Team, and the UWF Men's and Women's Basketball Teams. Entertainment will be provided by the Pura Sabrosura Salsa Dance Club, Southern Edge Dance Center Team, UWF Cheerleaders and more.

Save the Date 2011: Conflict Resolution Conference
On March 28 & 29, 2011, UWF held its 7th Annual Conflict Resolution Conference. This year's theme was "Different paths... Many approaches", to symbolize the different tools one can use to solve the many conflicts that they will encounter in daily life.Topics covered included workplace violence, rape prevention, suicide prevention, and cyber bullying.
October 28, 2010
On October 28, 2010, UWF hosted the Mobile Patriots for its 9th annual wheelchair basketball game. The Patriots played against a host of UWF and community teams for 15 minutes at a time. Linda "Sonshine" Moorer of 106.1 FM was the announcer. Home teams included the UWF Women's Basketball team, the UWF Clubs and Organizations team, the UWF Faculty and Staff/Business Leadership Network team, and Roy Jones Jr.'s All Stars. Entertainment was provided by the UWF Cheerleaders and the UWF Dance Team, with a half-time performance by the UWF Spirit Squad, which is comprised of faculty, staff, and student volunteers who practiced long and hard for the event.

Disability Awareness Day
UWF observed Disability Awareness Day on October 20, 2010 with a program of entertainment, presentations and experiential workshops in the University Commons Auditorium. UWF President Judy Bense delivered the Keynote address, in which she related her own experiences teaching students with disabilities, and how she focuses on what their abilities are rather than on their limitations.

For this event, the University honors one or more members of the UWF community for its Disabilities Awareness Award based on nominations by students, faculty and staff.
