Gordon Rule Requirements
The Gordon Rule is comprised of two separate requirements -- writing competencies and mathematical competencies.
To fulfill this requirement for earning the first baccalaureate degree, six semester hours of English coursework and six semester hours of additional coursework in which the student is required to demonstrate college-level writing skills through multiple assignments*, and six semester hours of mathematics at the level of college algebra or higher are required. Grades of "C-" or better are required to successfully complete this requirement. Courses may not be taken on the pass/fail basis. Further information concerning this requirement and specific courses meeting the requirements is available in the academic catalog.
In this example, only nine hours of the twelve hour writing component have been met. ENL1101 was taken at a Florida Community/Junior College during Fall 2001 (0108) and ENC1102 was successfully completed at UWF during Fall 2004 (0408). The student withdrew from ENC1102 at UWF during Spring 2002 (0201). The student also completed REL2000 (a course designated as writing intensive in the catalog) during Spring 2006 (0601).
The mathematics component was met with MAC1105 and STA2023 taken at a Florida Community/Junior College in Spring 2001 (0101) and Fall 2001 (0108).
* The Gordon Writing requirement was changed by the state in December 2005. Students who already had met the requirement were protected. Their audit may appear slightly different from the example above. The key item to remember is if there is an OK next to the requirement, the requirement is met.
