Compliance with Federalwide Assurance (FWA)

Federal regulations require that all institutions participating in research supported by a Federal Department or Agency provide a written Assurance. This document certifies that the institution follows all regulations regarding human subject research as noted in 45 CFR 46.


What is in a Federalwide Assurance?

An assurance must include (a) a statement of ethical principles that govern the institution in its protection of human research participants, (b) a statement that the institution has established an IRB for the review of potential resources and has provided support for that board, (c) a list of current IRB members, their relevant experience, and affiliation with the institution, (d) the written procedures with the IRB follow for conducting reviews of research at the institution, and (e) the written procedures for reporting adverse events and unanticipated problems to the IRB and funding agencies. (45 CFR 46)
