Arriving in the U.S.
Getting a J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa
Once admitted, international students are issued a Form DS-2019 by the International Student Office. The Form DS-2019 is used to apply for a J-1 exchange visitor visa.
The first step is to pay your SEVIS fee. This is done by logging on to www.fmjfee.com and paying the fee. The University of West Florida's Exchange Visitor Program number is P-1-05068.
After paying the SEVIS fee, it is possible to schedule an appointment with an embassy or consulate for a visa interview. The U.S. Department of State Exchange Visitor Visa Website is a valuable resource and will guide students through the process.
Arriving in Pensacola
It is suggested that students plan to arrive by plane. Trains and buses are not typically convenient transportation in this region. The nearest airport is Pensacola International Airport. Upon arrival, students typically take a taxi to the university. Taxicab fare usually costs between $25-35(USD).
Orientation and Check In
A new international student at UWF is required to do several things:
Check in with the International Student Office
New international students must check in with the International Student Office. Legal status is not activated until check in is completed. At check in students need to bring:
3. Form DS-2019
4. Proof of health insurance or a credit card to purchase health insurance with.
Students who do not check in within thirty(30) days lose their legal status as non-immigrants and will be terminated.
Attend the Mandatory International Student Office Orientation
All new international students are required to attend the International Student Office orientation. Any student who misses the orientation is required to complete a make-up orientation at a later date.
