Tuition Exemption Policies and Procedures

Tuition Exemption

  • This exemption program is open to citizens of Japan who are studying at state universities and community colleges that are within the Florida State University System and the Florida Community College System on an F-1 visa.
  • Exemptions may be awarded at the undergraduate, graduate, and vocational levels, for degree, non-degree and certificate programs of study. These exemptions do not apply to non-degree intensive English study.
  • Because there are more applicants than awards, tuition waiver awards are competitive! Relevant factors considered by the Institute include, but are not limited to: grade point average (GPA), type of degree program, and demonstration of progress towards a degree with intent to graduate (if the applicant is degree seeking student). Priority for a tuition exemption is given to students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Applicants must include the most recent official transcripts showing the cumulative GPA.
  • Complete applications must be received by the posted deadline.
  • Exemptions will be granted for no more than twelve (12) undergraduate hours or no more than nine (9) graduate or graduate/undergraduate combination hours, and the award may be less than requested.
  • Successful applicants will receive a letter authorizing the exemption. This allows the student to pay IN-STATE tuition for the number of hours awarded. Present this letter to the appropriate university/college office with the required fee payment. Once fees are paid, the student will receive a receipt.
  • Students who receive an award are required to send an official verification of enrollment for the semester they have been awarded by the 5th day of class. This allows the Institute to verify the number of hours the student is enrolled and to award any unused hours. Failing to send the verification may jeopardize consideration of future applications.
  • Exemptions are granted on a semester-by-semester basis, so students must submit an application for each semester.
  • Florida Statute 288.8175 authorizing this tuition exemption program provides that students awarded tuition exemptions are required to return to their home country, within 3 years after their studies, for a length of time equal to their exemption period.
  • All Students may apply following the guidance for the Florida-Japan Linkage Instute Tuition Exemption Form
