Certificate in Fit Ready


Want to start a healthy lifestyle but not sure where to begin? Ever feel like if you knew more about Recreation's Fitness/Wellness program offerings and fitness, in general, you'd be more inclined to participate? Now is your opportunity to learn everything you need to know to start your fitness journey. UWF's Fit Ready Certification is a program offered each semester which allows you to take control of your educational experience. Choose 4 out of 6 offerings and learn all of what UWF fitness has to offer and how to safely start your exercise journey. At the end of the course, you will feel confident when coming to participate in an exercise by yourself or with a group in the UWF fitness environment. You will have the knowledge it takes to safely lead a healthier lifestyle. You will also receive your UWF Fit Ready certificate acknowledging your achievements in health and fitness. Lastly, you will experience a sense of pride knowing how to efficiently create your own workout program, participate in group fitness classes, monitor nutrition, and make positive changes in your life. Courses that were previously a part of the Certificate in Fit Ready will still count towards a certificate as long as they were completed within two years of completing the certificate program. These courses are:

  • Introduction to Fitness/Wellness Lecture (Required)

 

Course Outline

Circuit Training Essentials (*Workout Attire Required)

Course Description: Circuit training can ignite your fitness routine and is a great way to perform multiple exercises in a short period of time. Circuit training essentials will cover an entire training session from start to finish. The workshop will begin with an introduction of dynamic warm-ups and how to properly prepare for a workout. The warm-up will be followed by a short circuit session with step-by-step instructions for exercises. The session will conclude with a static stretching and foam rolling portion that help release the muscle tightness following a workout session. 

Exercise Programming

Course Description: This class will provide the essential tools and information you need to create your own workouts! In this one hour course you will learn how to develop SMART goals, conduct your own personal fitness assessment, create a personalized workout program, and measure your progress. You will be able to utilize the information in this presentation to further your fitness knowledge and apply it to your own journey of obtaining a healthy lifestyle.

Fitness Intro/FC Orientation

Course Description: In the Intro to fitness/wellness you will learn about everything that UWF Recreation has to offer as you start your healthy lifestyle journey. The class will cover the amenities and programs such as personal training, massage therapy and group fitness classes offered in the HLS Facility. The workshop will also contain a fitness center orientation with a hands on practical with the equipment the fitness center has to offer. This workshop is necessary to complete the Fit Ready Certification and the building block of the upcoming workshops.

Food For Thought

Course Description: Nutrition plays a crucial role in living a long and happy life. In this course, we will cover the basics of nutrition including the roles of macronutrients, macronutrient percentages based on a healthy diet, timing of meals, swapping calorie dense foods for calorie “enriched’ foods, and diet trends. We will also discuss healthy eating habits and how to eat according to your personal goals. At the end of this workshop, you will understand why nutrition is an important factor and how to incorporate healthy decisions in your everyday life.

Get Fit in Your Office

Course Description: Difficult to step away from your office? No problem! Learn how to move in your office using your chair and desk. You will learn how to use 10-15 minutes of your day to keep you active and help you combat the symptoms associated with sitting for prolonged periods of time (i.e., poor posture!). Get Fit in your Office will help you prevent some of the dreaded side effects of having an office job, therefore making you a more productive and happier employee!

Group Fitness Sampler

Course Description: Does the idea of working out in a group sound like a good idea? Believe it or not, group fitness is how many people build self efficacy, confidence, strength, and endurance. Not to mention you learn a ton! This intro class will include 3 sample workout classes, POUND, HIIT, and YOGA. These classes will give you an insight on different styles of training and how to make exercising fun! *Please wear workout attire and athletic shoes to this workshop

Insane Cycle

Course Description - Join us for a high intensity, 75 minute cycle class that includes circuit training to improve your cycling performance, reach your fitness goals and give you a complete workout. 

Intro to Zumba (*Workout attire required)

Course Description: The class that started the dance-fitness revolution and changed the way we look at a “workout” forever. It’s fun, effective and best of all? Made for everyone! Please dress in workout attire and grab a towel because it’s going to get pretty sweaty!

Introduction to Group Fitness

Course Description: Does the idea of working out in a group sound like a good idea? Believe it or not group fitness is how many people build self-efficacy, confidence, strength, and endurance. Not to mention you learn a ton! This intro class will go over classes offered, the group fitness schedule, group fitness studios, as well as offer a small sample class at the end. Wear your workout gear and get ready to have fun!

Kettlebell/TRX Workshop

Course Description: Kettlebells and the TRX are two of the most versatile pieces of training equipment. This workshop will provide hands-on demonstrations on the multiple exercises that can be done with both kettlebells and the TRX.  The workshop will also include upper and lower body workouts so be prepared to workout and have fun doing it! *Please wear workout attire and athletic shoes to this workshop

Meet the Fitness Team (*Workout attire required)

Course Description: You will learn about everything that UWF Recreation has to offer as you start your healthy lifestyle journey. The class will cover the amenities and programs such as personal training, massage therapy, group fitness classes, and fitness center services offered in the HLS Facility. The workshop will begin with some hands-on activities such as free body composition assessments, a mini-group fitness class, and end with a fitness center orientation. This workshop is necessary to complete the Fit Ready Certification and the building block of the upcoming workshops.

Mobility and Stretching

Course Description: We all know that flexibility and mobility are critical components to our health, but do we know which stretches are the most beneficial? Do we know the proper technique? How long to hold each stretch? This workshop will answer all these questions. Take a break from work and join us in a much-needed stretch and mobility class.

No Weights, No Problem

Course Description: Not in a fitness facility or gym? Don’t have tools to work out? No problem! We will show you body weight exercises and workouts you can do with tools lying around at home. You will walk out with effective exercise ideas one can practice at home or in your office. We will show you how to target large muscle groups with compound body movements. This workshop is simple, easy and effective!

Nutrition

Course Description: Have you ever heard the myth that living a healthy lifestyle is 50% exercise and 50% nutrition? The reality is that a healthy lifestyle consists of 100% nutrition and 100% exercise. Putting a workout plan into action

Course Description: This class will provide the essential tools and information you need to create your own workouts! In this 90 minute course you will learn how to develop SMART goals, conduct your own personal fitness assessment, create a personalized workout program, and measure your progress. After creating your own workout plan, we will move to the fitness center where you will be able to put your plan into action with expert supervision and guidance. *Please wear workout attire and athletic shoes to this workshop

Resistance Band Basics

Course Description: Resistance bands provide some of the simplest yet effective workouts and can be done in the comfort of your home or office! In this workshop, you will learn the variety of movements that can be performed with resistance bands. You will also receive in-depth training advice from certified personal trainers on how to use resistance bands and implement them into your current training program. *Please wear workout attire and athletic shoes to this workshop

Step Your Way Into Fitness (*Workout attire required)

Course Description: Hate cardio? You will grow to love it! The music will distract you and guide you through the workout! You will burn lots of calories as you STEP your way into your fitness journey with our low-impact cardio workout. Step Aerobics is proven to effectively reduce total body weight and fat mass, improve muscle tone, decrease strain on joints, improve cardiovascular health, and even boost your self-esteem. 

The Importance of Mobility, Stability, and Flexibility (Practical)

Course Description: This class will consist of a practical learning experience in the University of West Florida Fitness Center so please wear proper workout attire!  You will learn how to properly warm-up before lifting and why warming up is vital to injury prevention.  You will also learn the roles that mobility and flexibility play in your everyday lives outside of the gym. The session will be concluded with effective myofascial release techniques paired with stretching to keep your body flexible and recover from your workouts faster!

Tips and Tricks for the Holidays

Course Description: The Holidays are approaching fast and temptations are high. We cannot resist the potatoes and gravy or milk and cookies but let’s make sure to eat mindfully! We we will show you portions that one can follow during the tempting snacks and dishes during the holidays. We will also show you healthy alternatives to Holiday favorites and provide insight on quick workouts you can do in between the Holiday rush. Tips and Tricks for the Holidays is going to be your fitness survival guide through the Holidays!

Valentine's Stretch Day (*Workout attire required)

Course Description: Celebrate the meaning of friendship and love with a coworker, friend, or partner at this one-time, Valentine's Stretch Day. Learn the importance of stretching and build strength, balance and deep oneness.

Weightlifting FUNdamentals (*Workout attire required)

Course Description: Weightlifting doesn’t have to be scary! This workshop will emphasize the three basic movements of squat, bench, and deadlift. Proper form for each movement will be explained as well as how to program the exercise into your routine. The workshop will conclude with demonstrations of accessory exercises for the compound movements.

Zen Out (*Workout attire required)

Course Description: Stressed from work? Need to take a break to breathe? Join us for our stress- relief workshop that will teach you techniques you can use to relieve stress and anxiety. We will be practicing breathing exercises, meditation, and light to intermediate stretches. You will walk out feeling rejuvenated!
