SAP Policy Basics

An overview of UWF's Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy.

Policy Basics Overview

Federal regulations require all schools participating in Title IV federal financial aid programs to have a Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy that establishes and applies uniform standards to academic progress. The SAP Policy conforms to specific grade-based and time-based requirements. All students must adhere to the policy requirements in order to qualify and remain eligible for financial aid.

The required components include:

  • GPA
  • Completion Ratio (CR)
  • Maximum Time Limit (MTL)

The GPA component is calculated using your entire academic history at UWF.

The CR and MTL components are calculated using your entire academic record from all schools attended, even if you did not receive financial aid.

SAP is calculated each semester after grades have been officially recorded in students’ academic history by the Office of the Registrar.

  • Email notifications are sent to students that need to improve academic progress (i.e., SAP Warning) or that become ineligible for financial aid.
  • Since we must wait until grades officially post, it may be close to the start of the next semester.
  • Check your SAP status in your MyUWF each semester.

Undergraduate Requirements

  • UWF GPA:
    • 1-29 credit hours: 1.80
    • 30+ credit hours: 2.00
    • Scholarship recipients: 3.00, unless otherwise noted
  • Completion Ratio (CR): 67%
  • Maximum Time Limit: 180 attempted credit hours

Graduate Requirements

  • UWF GPA: 3.00 at all times
  • Completion Ratio (CR): 67%
  • Maximum Time Limit:
    • Master’s and Specialist: 54 attempted credit hours

Note: The SAP requirements are not the same as the institutional academic requirements needed to earn your degree. Maximum Time Limit is not the same policy as Florida’s Excess Hours legislation.
